Have lies ruined the trust you had for someone when trying to deal with their addiction? Do they forget what they said and did last night (blackouts), possibly as a result of their alcoholism? Denial is a very common attribute of addicts. They often do not know they are sick. Alcoholism is a cunning and baffling disease. "Alcoholism is widely recognized as a disease of compulsive drinking, which can be arrested, but not cured. It is a progressive illness, which will get only worse as long as the person continues to drink. ... Alcoholism affects the entire family; indeed, everyone who has contact with the alcoholic is affected. Unfortunately, the only person who can stop the alcoholic from drinking is the alcoholic himself or herself." [Al-Anon]

Is it hard to identify what you are feeling and why?
"... Sometimes a brother, a sister, or some other friend or relative brings us to Al-Anon. Many of us have had more than one alcoholic family member or friend.
Alcoholism has similar effects on us all, even though our relationships to the alcoholic may be different. Many newcomers are most interested in hearing about situations and relationships that are similar to their own. Over time, however, we come to understand that we can benefit from hearing how the Al-Anon principles worked in many different circumstances.
